Working With WordPress

I work exclusively with WordPress.org, a self-hosted platform – not to be confused with WordPress.com. I appreciate the open-source (free!) software, versatility, and customization that it offers. Additional plugins can make it easy to use, offering added security and lots of functionality.

Web Hosting

A web hosting provider stores website files on a physical server and makes them accessible to Internet users. Because I work exclusively with WordPress.org, clients will also need to choose a web hosting service. There are many options out there, though it is my personal policy not to have financial affiliations with any one provider. I do recommend QTH, a local hosting provider, for its affordability ($60/year starting), reasonably priced domain names, and excellent customer service. It also includes free security certificates for your website, which can cost up to an additional $120/year elsewhere.

Clients only need to let me know which provider they would like to work with. I will handle all of the technical installation.

Keeping Your Site Secure

Setting up the Wordfence Plugin

Using the WordFence plugin will notify you of potential security concerns and threats, including user log-ins, changed files, and more. I will set this up for you upon installation.

Deleting Unused Plugins and Themes

Deleting any unused and deactivated plugins and themes will reduce the risk for a website hack.

Keeping Plugins, Themes, and WordPress Updated

Wordfence will let you know when you need an update. Additionally, you could use a plugin like Companion Autoupdate to keep these plugins updated. I set this up for you upon installation.

Contacting Your Hosting Provider with Issues

If you suspect your website has been hacked, hosting providers are usually quick to help assess the problem and improve the health of your site.

Updating Passwords Periodically

Updating user passwords and cpanel passwords periodically will help prevent your user information from becoming compromised.
